b. in Sommersville, New Jersey; d. April 1, 1855, in Springfield, Illinois. Campbell was the brother of Antrim Campbell. Campbell came to Springfield in 1838 and began the practice of law. In 1839, Campbell, a Democrat, was elected by the state legislature to the office of state's attorney over his Whig opponent, David Davis. He was a "noted fiddler," who carried his violin with him when traveling the Eighth Judicial Circuit. He served as state's attorney from 1848 until his death.
